I was disturbed by that quote when I read it for the first time (just recently). So polarizing. "How could a society hold together if everyone suspects each other of being envious", I thought. But then it was like "hey Prabhupada, you're right, and that's one of the reasons I got the hell out of there".
I think Prabhupada had his own version of the word "envious", meaning envious of Krishna.
You are envious of Krishna if you want something that Krishna has, and therefore we don't need to follow:
sannyasis with a harem of groupies.
sannyasis with a harem of young boys.
sannyasis busy collecting money, bank accounts and valuables
sannyasis who want to be glorified and served
sannyasis, and others, in general that want any of Krishna's opulences
Prabhupada says that all those should be ignored.
Those sannyasis or gurus that want nothing but Krishna; those are the ones we should listen to.
Those who have Krishna's name, and therefore have everything and want nothing.
I don't see ISKCON going in that direction.
