Full Version: 38 Realizations in 17 KC years!
Gaudiya Repercussions > How We Relate to Spirit > Freedom From Faith

I just found this list of 38 things learned in 17 years of living in early ISKCON. It is written by Stephen J. Gelberg (Subhananda das) and was presented by him to the 2007 conference of the International Cultic Studies Association (ICSA), in Brussels, Belgium.

Though I can relate to most of his learned realizations, my favorite one is #12:

12) "I learned that otherwise thoughtful, sensitive, intelligent, even charming people can, under the right psycho-social conditions, find themselves quite happily and contentedly inhabiting a social universe that is essentially hierarchic, authoritarian and sexist."

Here is the link to rest of his learned list:

Some Things I Learned During My Seventeen Years in the Hare Krishna Movement

Well, hello there "Subhananda", thanks for checkin' in! Ya know it's been a long time since I've been to any of your Sunday school classes and that makes up for all of them right there!

20) I learned that service to Krishna automatically trumps mundane morality and ethics. To get one of our books or other products into the hands of a non-devotee, and to separate him or her from their money, one could say and do virtually anything.

I learned that there is absolutely no such thing as "devotional service" that is devoid of karma. However I hold this realization under suspension - waiting for someone who can show me devotional service "devoid of dependance on karmis" or at the very least "without the need to get a (government) check".

28) I learned how a genuine, heartfelt desire for spiritual meaning and enlightenment can cause otherwise intelligent, accomplished, self-respecting women to re-fashion themselves as subservient beings, fully dedicated to the notion of their inferiority to men and therefore their natural servants (not to mention impediments to their spiritual progress).

I wonder if when you came knocking on Krishna's gate He would understand someone who got stupid over something other than a woman.

Ya know, you might just get f--king rejected

I learnt that God doesn't love losers, so why bother. Cool post, cheers.
