Hindu Afterworlds - A Journey Across Heaven and Hell

The concepts of heaven and hell as destinations of afterlife are sometimes thought of as the exclusive domain of Abrahamic religions. However, heaven and hell are also described in the Hindu scriptures — and very colorfully and elaborately at that!

The Puranas, literally "ancient texts", form one of the main genres of Hindu scripture. They feature elaborate narrations on the teachings of the great sages, on the adventures of the great warriors, on the fierce battles of the gods and the demons, along with hosts of other phenomenal tales that defy even the greatest modern works of fantasy and fiction. Such a genre would not be perfect without magnificent afterworlds.

I am doing some work with some Puranas now, having before only read the SB. Its amazing how tedious they are in the need to tell and retell the same stories, with slight variations Probably some of them having been added to continuously until up to 5-600 years ago had something to do with it. Unfortunately with the internet and the printing press people like me who would like to add more to them wont have an easy go of it.

Hell. Everybody's got a different take on and experience of it.

I was about to and did post éxcept for the Taoists (who have no conception of hell, according to wikipedia) and are neither for or against it.

The only good thing about hell is that Leonard Cohen sings about all the burning souls there, with such tender compassion and love.

"If It Be Your Will"

If it be your will
That I speak no more
And my voice be still
As it was before
I will speak no more
I shall abide until
I am spoken for
If it be your will
If it be your will
That a voice be true
From this broken hill
I will sing to you
From this broken hill
All your praises they shall ring
If it be your will
To let me sing
From this broken hill
All your praises they shall ring
If it be your will
To let me sing

If it be your will
If there is a choice
Let the rivers fill
Let the hills rejoice
Let your mercy spill
On all these burning hearts in hell
If it be your will
To make us well

And draw us near
And bind us tight
All your children here
In their rags of light
In our rags of light
All dressed to kill
And end this night
If it be your will

If it be your will.

hell used to exist but since studies have shown no correlation between punishment and crime deterence, god has shut down the prisons and has adopted more compassionate methods

Hell appears to still be going on, the genocide in Darfur, an estimated one million people left homeless without food and clean drinking water in Pakistan, honour killings in Indian and Muslim cultures, trafficking children and women in the sexual slave trade, poverty and extreme poverty.

I could go on but i won't .

your views that punishment and judgement are irrelevant co-incides with this

So, where is this hell that man created?

What saith the Lard?

Malachi 1:4

Whereas Edom saith, We are impoverished, but we will return and build the desolate places; thus saith the LORD of hosts, They shall build, but I will throw down; and they shall call them, The border of wickedness, and, The people against whom the LORD hath indignation for ever.

Shit, man! When the Lard is pissed off, he's pissed off!! FOR EVER!!! Hell?

Hell was made for heathens - whether The Lard or man made hell, the intent is justice.

Does god care for the damned?

God did not create Hell, he created Limbo.
LIMBUS INFANTIUM
The New Testament contains no definite statement of a positive kind regarding the lot of those who die in original sin without being burdened with grievous personal guilt. But, by insisting on the absolute necessity of being "born again of water and the Holy Ghost" (John 3:5) for entry into the kingdom of Heaven (see BAPTISM, subtitle Necessity of Baptism), Christ clearly enough implies that men are born into this world in a state of sin, and St. Paul's teaching to the same effect is quite explicit (Romans 5:12 sqq.). On the other hand, it is clear from Scripture and Catholic tradition that the means of regeneration provided for this life do not remain available after death, so that those dying unregenerate are eternally excluded from the supernatural happiness of the beatific vision (John 9:4, Luke 12:40, 16:19 sqq., 2 Corinthians 5:10; see also APOCATASTASIS). The question therefore arises as to what, in the absence of a clear positive revelation on the subject, we ought in conformity with Catholic principles to believe regarding the eternal lot of such persons. Now it may confidently be said that, as the result of centuries of speculation on the subject, we ought to believe that these souls enjoy and will eternally enjoy a state of perfect natural happiness; and this is what Catholics usually mean when they speak of the limbus infantium, the "children's limbo."

Chubby Checker created The Limbo Song

Get yourself a limbo girl
Give that chic a limbo whirl
There's a limbo moon above
You will fall in limbo love
Jack be limbo, Jack be quick
Jack go unda limbo stick
All around the limbo clock
Hey, let's do the limbo rock

I like Chubby Checker more and more. You can play at god's house, if you want.

Original Sin!!!

If my great great great great grandfather burned down a house with babies inside, do I get arrested and charged for the crime?

If god were just, why would he hold me accountable because some dumb broad forgot she wasn't supposed to eat that darned apple?

What was Adam supposed to do? He didn't know squat, either.

Oh sure, blame Eve (how very unoriginal)

If God is just then he wouldn't have planted the forbidden apple tree there in the first place and if he is sane then he wouldn't have reacted so harshly. It's like a parent saying to a child "You can't have a cookie before supper" and then when the kid sneaks the cookie the parent throws him or her out into the streets to fend for him/her self and then levies a curse on the kid's future generations.

Eve symbolizes rebellion against dumb authority

Or why would Krishna allow us to have an enjoying spirit and then to insist that one becomes a cardboard cut-out of some old guy who believed that if he chanted 100 000 000 000 000 rounds a day then the universe would be a better place?

"No, I'm not going to heaven (Vai-youknowwhere) until all the souls in the entire creation end up just like me." Then he, god, watches as everyone refuses to go through the gate marked The 1st Class Prasadam Hall rather than the one where they give you slop and charge you for it, until someone else makes the first move.

Tapati
A Pagan died and, much to her surprise, found herself at the Pearly Gates facing St. Peter. He walked up to her and said, "Hello, and welcome.

She stared at St. Peter in complete confusion. "Wait a minute," she said. "I was supposed to end up in the Summerlands."

He smiled. "Ah, you must be one of our Pagan sisters. Follow me, please."

Peter gestured for her to follow him down a small path which went through the gates and down a bit to the left. They walked for a short while, then he stepped back and gestured her forward. Looking past his hand, she saw the verdant fields and forests of her desired Summerlands. She saw people feasting, dancing, and making merry, exactly as she expected.

While shaking her head in wonder, the Pagan happened to glance over to one side and saw a small group of people a short way away from the edge of the Summerlands. The people in the group were watching the revelers, but not joining them. Instead, they were screaming and weeping piteously. The Pagan looked at St. Peter. "Who are those people? St. Peter replied,

"Them? They're Fundamentalists. They're a bit surprised to see you all there, so they stand there and carry on like that all day."

"Why? Don't they have better things to do?"

Peter leaned conspiratorially toward her. "They don't really have a choice. They're actually in Hell. God doesn't like being told what He thinks."

In another version, it's a Christian who dies and comes to heaven. He, just like your Pagan, receives a tour of Heaven with Peter. There is a meadow where the Methodists are joyfully camping and praising the Lord, there is another idyllic place where the Baptists are situated, and so on for other denominations. Then the newcomer sees a wall and asks what is behind it. S:t Peter motions to him to be quiet, and answers under his breath: "Shhh! There are the Catholics. They believe they are the only ones here."

It was actually shot once on GD, or somewhere like that.
It said about two new gopis who arrived in Goloka wander about, guided by an older resident gopi. Reaching a particular kunja, their guide stops them and turns them in another direction:
"Wait, you shouldn't go in this place"
"Why?" ask the two newly arrived gopis.
"This the ISKCON kunja. They believe only they are here".

but then, it could be applied to many parivars...
