As far as I know, Dr. Bombay is a Danish artist, but he sings the following with an authentic Indian accent to a lively and vigorous tune.

RICE AND CURRY

My uncle in Bombay
He is very nice
When he's on holiday
I take his field of rice
And open up a store
Like many times before
The best that's found
in Calcutta town

Hurry Hurry Hurry
Buy my rice and curry
Buy my rice and curry
So Hurry Hurry Hurry
Hurry Hurry Hurry
Buy my rice and curry
Buy one for two
Special price for you

I think I have a problem
I really don't know why
I never have a customer
Who wants to come twice
Although I guarantee
My secret recepie
The best that's found
In Calcutta town

Hurry Hurry Hurry
Buy my rice and curry
Buy my rice and curry
So Hurry Hurry Hurry
Hurry Hurry Hurry
Buy my rice and curry
Buy one for two
Special price for you

Oh wey oh
Curry nam nam Curry curry curry nam nam
Oh wey oh
Curry nam nam Curry curry nam nam Curry curry
Oh wey oh
Curry nam nam Curry curry curry nam nam
Oh wey oh

The rice is little sticky
And so I got a clue

Didn't Dr Bombay once have a song about all his relatives that got eaten by a tiger? I loved it! w00t.gif

Indian-inspired music is one of my favorite kinds of music these days. This includes "serious" raga-ish/jazzy or experimental things (Ravi Shankar, Sheila Chandra, Shweta Jhaveri etc.), as well as more Indian techno pop, bhangra etc. Like Sukhvinder Singh's track from "Monsoon Wedding," it just never fails to make me laugh. Or Cornershop, a song with a tongue-in-cheek but very thoughtful lyric, "Brimful of Asha." Nitin Sawhney, Panjabi MC... blush.gif

I have a double CD, "The Very Best of India," produced under NASCENTE label. It even has some Bollywood tangos and rockabilly (yes!) from 50s and 60s...

Similar interests or good names/titles to share, anyone?

I thought Dr. Bombay was a porn webmaster? blink.gif

Dhyana, wow! You like bhangra and Punjabi MC ?! biggrin.gif I thought his "Switchin'" was his best work. Short, but excellent. smile.gif By Sukhvinder Singh's song you were referring to 'Aaj mera jee karda'?

You could try checking out some stuff by B21 - their 'By Public Demand' album defined bhangra. smile.gif You can hear some clips here, but I don't think they're good enough. The song 'Din Raat' on the aforementioned album was their best work in my view. smile.gif I have tons of bhangra and bollywood soundtrack tapes, but I haven't been into the scene for a while now. Dhyana you could also try checking out 'The Rising' by Tigerstyle. That album was also excellent. 'Nakhra Gori Da' by Gurdas Maan is another excellent piece. What do you think of Bally Sagoo though?

Listen to me, I can recommend some good stuff. cool.gif

haha punjabi mc i am shocked! I remember one time it was an out and out bad night, and it was time to go home. I got a cab with this old indian taxidriver heading home quietly everyone in a feeling of not having had a great time. Then, he switches the radio to these stations of saturday night club mixes, and on comes the song by Punjabi Mc, 'Beware of the Boys.' And he blares this song full volume and starts singing along. It was so shocking. Then everyone in the taxi gets his contagious feeling and starts dancing and it becomes the best time ever. Who knows this song? You should all get it! It has the golden nugget lyric: "the black Brad Pitt!"

Yes, Aaj mera jee kardaa. I wish I could understand the lyrics! Although some words and phrases in them can be guessed... biggrin.gif
The track of Panjabi MC that comes to mind now that I like best is Mundian To Bach Ke (don't ask me what that means... or maybe you could translate? FLOWERS.GIF ) but there is more, just that I can't remember the titles. I will check out Switchin'.

What do you think of Bally Sagoo though?

I am aware of only one song, that's on my Nascente disc, it's called Dil Cheez and it's not bad, but not the best one there. A bit syrupy...

I often listen to a collection of remixes (I believe) entitled Swami Bhangra Dot Com. Good stuff there too, but it's hard for me to figure out who is who and who sings whose songs etc...

Hey Dhyana, if you're still into bhangra, you can try downloading New Adventures of Jassi Sidhu by,.... Jassi Sidhu. smile.gif

Jassi Sidhu is cool, man. I loved his stuff when he was with B21, who I've mentioned above. I've beenout of the scene for years and only recently returned to it in the last few days. Apparently B21 split up acrimoniously and Jassi Sidhu is now a solo act.

Anyway, the best track on that album (imo) is Thaal. Or make your life easier and PM me your email address, and I'll email it to you. If you like bhangra you should get this, it's been on my repeat all day. smile.gif

*hums* Nachle tu nach aaja sadeh naal, sohniye..!

Lol, I gave a recommendation four years later judging from the post dates, how crazy is that? Lol.. I sure hope you haven't been starving, Dhyana! tongue.gif

I hope you at least caught Mundian To Bach Ke by Punjabi MC? That song went mainstream with its Knight Rider remix.
Dhyana
Hello Brainiac, an enthusiastic recommendation from someone in the know does not lose in value even if it comes three years later...

Thanks for your kind offer as well, but I do not download music since I never listen to music via my computer. (Almost never.) But thank you anyway!

And no, I have certainly not been starving! danceman.gif veildance.gif danceman.gif

'Nakhra Gori Da' by Gurdas Maan is another excellent piece.

Here we go, after four years, Dance, O Fair One!
