Like Jeffrey J. Kripal, author of Kali's Child, The Mystical and the Erotic in the Life and Teachings of Ramakrishna, Chicago 1995?

Yes indeed, he wrote Authors of the Impossible: The Paranormal and the Sacred and Kripal and Scott Jones are making a documentary film of that book.

Strange that only Kripal's book gave such a stink in Ramakrsna circles whereas Narasingha Sil in his Ramakrsna Paramahamsa, A Psychological Profile, E.J. Brill, Leiden 1991, wrote pretty much the same thing about his latent homo- and paedophilia, for instance:

"There may be a deeper meaning in Ramakrsna's insistence that the best way for a man to conquer lust is to behave like a woman. To him, sexuality liberated from conventional carnal relationship was immaculate and hence divine. First of all, we must bear in mind that his traumatic childhood might have resulted in 'bisexual confusion' as well as identity-consciousness.
"A solution to this problem is, according to Erikson, "an ascetic turning away from sexuality." Ramakrsnas ascetic solution or Seelenwollust ("soul voluptuousness") was facilitated undoubtedly by his Vaisnavic upbringing that apotheosized a feminine surrender to God.
"He thus attempted to "unman" himself by simulating a passive or feminine behavior imagining himself to be a woman in divinely lusty entanglement with a male God. The male God whom he preferred almost always to dote on is the Hindu Dionysus Krsna, the lord of the ecstatic maenades--those mad gopis who forget their world and rush out of home to be with their lover-God."


In this rather weak book written by a historian not a psychiatrist he even suggests that Ramakrsna was growing breasts! But no reactions.

Thanks for posting the pdf. I found it interesting. Although I think the authors did not get into enough detail with Kripal's book, and that it was unsmart (or perhaps even intentional?) that they chose to throw Kripal into the same pot with Courtright. In any case, the paper does add some useful insights to the debate and does give some ideas as to why certain Hindus might possibly have bent out of shape more vigorously than others.

These are covert government agents from S4 (Sector Four) who filmed themselves creating these circles. Notice the dramatic lighting on the ground and how the video was created from far above by a surveillance drone. This was done to debunk mysterious crop circles that could not be explained scientifically and were possibly created by alien craft, the type S4 have secured and are reverse engineering at Nevada's Nellis Air Force Range (NTTR at Area 51).

CirclemakersTV.org is a front for S4 and the United States Air Force disinformation services which now have access to many network and cable networks worldwide though negotiations and treaties with other national governments and their military services, who are all in the coverup.

There are sources for the above information, but I am presently not allowed to reveal them due to the sensitivity of the confidential government information that has been leaked, so I know nothing as as far as everyone here is concerned, and you have just read nothing but the subplot to my next science fiction novel.

That's just it - they didn't react. Dogs have more compassion than some humans.

They did react. Most saw the girl -- at least they saw that some wounded body was lying there -- and they changed their direction, avoiding coming closer.

What that stands for one can only speculate.

If I were on my way somewhere down that street, doing some daily routine, feeling kind of OK going home after a day of work, and I would be faced with a catastrophe such as this, I would definitely have an instinct to just avoid taking it in.

What I would do in reality, would I resist that instinct or not, I do not know.

True. They did react with indifference. To my mind this is a non-reaction.

I speculate that this stands for a disassociation of the self from the natural instinct of empathy. In other words, cut off from the self.

Would you help her if you were walking by? Ask yourself if you would be grateful to be helped if you were lying helpless and injured on the road.

As I said before, I don't know. We know only as much about ourselves as we have experienced.

What I do know, is that when I see a person that might mean "disturbance" from a distance, I follow the instinct to ignore it. If I get a contact with the person (meaning we come close enough, or eye contact) I am still upset about being "disturbed", but some other automatic reaction kicks in, and I smile and help, and it even feels sincere. I am not at all sure it's empathy. There seems to be a lot of conditioning of some kind in it.


Homer, frankly, I wonder how you can even ask that question. Who wouldn't? But putting oneself mentally in another's shoes is not necessarily one's first impulse as a passerby in a situation such as this.

As far as being cut off from the self -- I don't think it is self, it rather sounds like conscience.

Wanting to be left in peace is as much part of my self as being willing to help.

I am always the fool who tries to help the helpless. It gets me in trouble regularly. I couldn't live with myself if I did otherwise.

The world would be a very bad place without people like you, who just jump in and help.

Thank you. What you say about conditioning is a puzzle to me. I believe that I was hard-wired this way.

Things can get complicated when people are addicted to being the victim in a co dependency situation.

I know i would have helped, i understand when there are disturbances of adults, and so i would not be so quick to help, but this was obviously a child, and i don't think a child would fake injury, or be a disturbance. I know i would have helped in this case. I could not even watch after the first second where she got hit by the car.

Since that Video went "viral" the Chinese are enacting a "good Samaritan law" to try to get people to be more kind. The news made me cry for that girl, and again now. This world can be so cruel.

I think I need to take a long watery road trip across the ocean in search for that attic somewhere in Prague where the golem waits for reanimation into the modern age. In some ways the Gears Cube could be seen as a postmodern golem reanimating itself into life, changing form, whirling around like a dervish, expending its mystical energy, only to eventually stop and hide within the cube of the attic it originally came from!

I could start a thread on the Golem, but I leave it at this for the moment because it is bit of a niche-market, except when there is interest in what Gershom Sholem, mentioned in this poem, has to say.

the name is archetype of the thing,

Made of consonants and vowels,
there is a terrible Name,
that in its essence encodes God’s all,

It was corroded by sin (the Cabalists say),
time erased it, and generations

We know that there was a time in
which the people of God searched for the Name

Judá permutated the alphabet through complex variations
