Ananda, are you at all aware of the Finnish "freak folk" scene?

I recently undertook a massive exploration of seriously underground music (I do this from time to time), and it seemed like everywhere I turned, I was coming across one of these Finnish collectives. They are generally some rather out-there hippie mystics. Some of it's good, some of it is... just out-there.

Heard of any of these?

I forgot zanardi is from Finland, as well. What about you, zanardi? Ever come across any of these strange collectives?

You have never heard of M.A. Numminen? He once wanted to start dating my mother in law. That was close, whew!

Are you serious? I thought I was being a bit presumptuous, but I live in such a big country that smaller ones inevitably make me wonder if different groups come in contact more easily. It didn't seem so far-fetched that you guys would have stumbled upon this music, but I did not expect so personal a connection as this!

I really like Islaja's voice, I must say. But I have not yet listened to Mr. Numminen.

Ha,ha, bravo! Really funny. I liked his Wittgenstein lyrics too.

We have a lot of remarkably odd music in Finland, both in the older generations and in the contemporary circles, all the way from bizarre folk music to Suomisaundi Psytrance (DJ Oval of Vishnudata is an old friend of mine).

And the following is an almost unrelated illustration of how nuts the Finns can go... The chorus says, "Do stick that pepper in the soup, so that the soup would not go sour." And it's 1:08 minutes long. biggrin.gif

I used to dig this Finnish band quite a bit. I was told the song title means "back to reality."

A lot of kids in my area are into extremist Finnish music like Kaaos and Riistetyt, but I could never quite dig on any of that, expansive though my tastes may be!

"Danny" Ilkka Lipsanen is widely known as Big-D. He used to have and still has fantastic bands behind him. I remember dancing myself to complete exhaustion as a teenager when Big-D and his band came to play in our little town.

Who knows, maybe I own my one and only win in a disco dancing competition to those days, letting it all hang out when Ilkka Lipsanen was still at the top of his a-game? cow_white.gif

Now that we are into anthropology, here is a fine example. Everybody knows sauna. But just see the emotions it can bring about when put into musical context. Here it goes!

It seems every country or district has it's very own iconic people or music that influenced the kids and teenagers who lived within it. It's great to be able to learn about them and connect so many years later, getting an understanding of how it helped shape and evolve a culture or the person you learn it from. All I can say is "Go Danny Go!", but to think of the uber sankirtan young man who raced motorcycles and even cars in the snow and biked the highest mountains as being once a disco dancing champion... is the real pleasant surprise of the day!

Pictures, we need pictures of the disco dancing champ! banana.gif

Lucky for you, I am as vainglorious as ever.
It is even better with some fitting music. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ssXBmSu7b_Q
