Americans are religious, but generally non-dogmatic about their faith, according to a major survey released today by the Pew Research Center’s Forum on Religion & Public Life. The strangest result is that 21% of Atheist say they believe in some form of God, which leads me to believe these are respondents in need of exploring what they really believe more closely and attach a new tag to their personal belief system.

About 92% of Americans believe in God, while 70% say that many religions can lead to eternal life. Across the U.S., Hindus were the most tolerant among survey respondents, with 89% of them agreeing that many religions can lead to eternal life. About 86% of Buddhists believe that, 82% of Jews, 79% of Catholics, 66% of Protestants and 56% of Muslims.

A friend of mine went to the US recently and on returning to the UK she said that the main difference she noticed there was that more Americans were religious than here in England and also they were more open about it.

She had a job there and people at work talked about God in the workplace and asked her if she was a christian?? thats never happeened to me in all my years here in the UK, in fact people get embarrassed if you bring up religion, its not cool to talk about it and most people aren't religious at all, well at my work anyway and I'd say its a good cross section of folks.

Wonder what its like in other countries?? and if its like that everywhere in the US or only certain bits??

In the Netherlands 2007:

Protestant 19%
Roman-Catholic 28%
Islam 5%
other 4%
none 44%

But church attendance is only about 4% and people who call themselves "spiritual but not belonging to any organisation" is 25%.

In Hungary, the religious affiliation of the family is remembered, but only about half of the people claim to be religious at all - atheism was a staple in Communist-governed countries, and it seems that the polulation's allegiance to the then existing religions was already low. Only about 10 percent claims that they live by the doctrines of their claimed religious organization.

It is mostly a don't-tell-don't-ask matter here, except for two groups. One whose religions ask for behavior that is considered unusual (like being vegetarian, or chanting) will be at the center of attention for sure. And there are political organizations on the far right, which, among other causes, champion church values and clericalism - these are very vocal about their own religiousness (and indeed, about all the causes they have any opinion on. gripe.gif ).

I wouldn't trust the reliability of any survey taken by an organization by the name of Pew Research Center. They probably walked around their church and surveyed the people sitting in the pews. LOL
