Forum Upgrades - Nov 2008 Options

Finally over and out with India, I'm in a place with 24h electricity and proper internet access... Ahh, the cool Scandinavia! Cold breezes and cloudy skies, an atmosphere of mist and magic engulfs the vast Nordic skies.

I will be running a full upgrade of the forums sometime during the following three days. I am currently pulling together all my GR notes, taking backups and so forth. Any updates will be announced in this thread; I'll update this post to reflect the changes. Feel free to discuss.

The only substantial user-end effect will occur with step 2, during which the forum will be offline for about an hour or less, depending on how smooth things go.

Yea, it's good to be back, and a mighty lot of stories featuring Sai Baba Supermarket pants torn off into two pieces at the airport, and the rest. I do have a bunch of tinkering on many fronteers, but much in the pipe for writing.

A recent database error caused the thread Twilight Zones to be filed under a non-existing forum id entry (40 instead of 42). Dug it up and modified the database, here goes again. Please report any other missing threads, give parent forum, exact thread title and if possible URL or thread number (e.g. index.php?showtopic=1954).

That thread is mighty 50+ pages long. Might it be a good idea to close it and start a new one? Aran may be attached to holding the forum record of length, but maybe loooooooong things carry greater risk of a scramble-up?

Shouldn't have any effect on the database, each post is just a single entry with different numbers (e.g. 29) in particular fields to indicate where the entry belongs. There is no accumulation effect that I would be aware of.

I am sending mails to you and Tapati with individual step-by-step notes on fixing database errors. I am not providing them in public, as they contain information on areas only relevant to the admins -- we don't need more script kiddies trying to fuss around.

The recent upgrade hell seems to have finally resolved itself. I haven't browsed around enough yet to know what works and what not, but skins seem to have gone booboo. Only the latest default skin is currently active to prevent any troubles. Working on restoring skins.

When I read texts from, say, two days ago where X quotes Y, I see the "quote" and "end quote" commands around Y's text. Same with image commands, I see the image's address rather than the image itself. The Buddha boy for example.

Any good attempt with heading and description of some sorts with the URL will do. E.g.

Whenever I try to format text, the buttons don't seem to be doing anything at all.

It just needs to have enough info to let me repeat what has happened. Text formatting in the current editor seems to work.

The Buddha Boy thread seems to be working fine now. You must have looked at it while I was in the middle of running the "rebuild post content" maintenance task.
