Previously we read about the group of geek guys who expressed the opinion that it would be a wonderful, sexually free and pure world if they could only ask women to simply let them touch their breasts with no fear of negativity--even if the woman said no, she would not be offended. A geek woman nearby invited them to do so and a new cultural movement was born. The resulting outcry of feminists and sympathetic men who could see that in our unenlightened and imperfect world this could lead to sexual assaults and gang gropes (or worse) caused the originator of the idea to withdraw his support and apologize gracefully. (Good for him, honestly, it takes guts to face up to critical feedback, learn something, and admit your error.)

For all those who are still creeped out by the original idea, though, here's a modest proposal from the other perspective:

http://misia.livejournal.com/1055120.html

I confess, I have often felt the temptation described and think it would be wonderful if I could only ask and then receive the privilege.

But even he started out life as a woman, so I think you'll have to put up with us awhile longer. At least until they make artificial wombs and learn how to replicate eggs.

There's been another good response to the Open source boob project, plus a group of men who pledge their support:

Open Source Women Back Each Other Up Project

and

Gentlemen's Auxiliary Support

The trick is to be nonspecific as to the person...

There is much pleasure in the squeezing of breasts. The kicking of bollocks brings only excruciating pain. crying.gif

Not for the woman if she didn't want her breasts squeezed. When it happened to me against my will it was really creepy and nauseating.

Old story but noteworthy for racism in media angle.

Related USA Today Story

I am amazed that I didn't hear that story in a time where cable news alerts you to kittens tragically stuck in trees. (I'm not exaggerating by much here.)

The Catch 22 Women of Color find themselves in.

Internalized sexism more prevalent than racism in Women of Color

What a minefield to navigate. I think I feel somewhat less conflict as a feminist with a poverty background--though the default assumption of the feminist community is that every feminist is middle or upper class, and the ignorance of class issues is as great as the ignorance of issues relevant to people of color.

Father gives daughter bikini wax, manages adult film career.

He also helpfully gives her a ride to the brothel. The link brings one to a video clip of the waxing.

Frats harass women at Yale University's women's center, get off scot free.

I remember some of the creeps that used to bother us and even threaten us when I worked at the local women's center. The campus police finally installed a security switch that would send a signal directly to their office.

Boy Doll Accessories and Girl Doll Accessories: an art piece.

Indoctrination starts young. Sure, boys and girls may gravitate at times to different toys--though my boy was happy to also play with dolls and my girl was into trucks and cars. Give them lots of options and let them decide. (And why don't we weed violence-oriented toys altogether--do boys really need guns?)

An aside: why is everything for girls--the little trikes, girl-oriented computers, etc., all in that nauseating Pepto-Bismol pink? I finally just stopped buying the girlie version for my daughter and grabbed the bright red mini-ATVs instead.

Seeking stories of women involved in feminist activism

Here's a chance to contribute to a history of the women's movement. Did you march, put up flyers, stuff envelopes, do speaking engagements, or other activities in support of women's rights?

I should write about my women's center years and my time spent publishing a feminist e-zine.

This is absolutely disgusting:

Young woman groped onstage by comedian in the name of comedy

More links:

http://blogs.guardian.co.uk/theatre/2008/0...hnny_vegas.html

http://feministing.com/archives/009118.html

The woman he focused on was about 18 or 19 and was very obviously unnerved by his attention...Vegas insisted that she allow herself to be carried on to the stage by six members of the audience - he called them "pall bearers". She must pretend to be dead, he said, and he would bring her back to life with an onstage kiss...As she was carried on stage, Vegas repeatedly goaded one of the pallbearers to "finger" the girl.

Once she was on stage, Vegas told her to lie very still. She couldn't stop her nervous giggling; he threatened to kick her in the ribs. It didn't come across to me as a joke - and near to where I was sitting, no one was laughing. Eventually Vegas crouched down beside the nervous girl and started stroking her breasts while repeatedly saying, "don't frakking move". Then he ran his hand up her leg and began pulling her skirt up. Every time he looked up to address the audience, she would reach down and pull her skirt back down, but he kept pulling it back up. According to [James] Williams, who had a different view of the stage from me, Vegas ended up "fingering her through her clothes for a second or two". What I heard was an audible sharp intake of breath from the audience as they realised that the woman was getting much more than the kiss Vegas had told her to expect.

How Disasters affect women, especially in the Third World.

QUOTE
When a disaster occurs, don’t forget the gendered aspects. During the chaos, women can be more vulnerable to rape and violence by intimate partners. They may trade their bodies for aid. Because women often care for the young, the old and the sick, they may have greater needs or different needs than men. In many cultures, women have to protect their honor or dignity in different ways that may hinder their ability to get help.

With extensive community ties, women also can have an advantage in distributing aid after a disaster.

Also, here's a blast from a more sexist past (we are making progress because I can't imagine this being used today):
