Indo-Pagans Try to Bridget Hindu-Pagan Divide

www.religionwatch.com

USA, May 9, 2007: (HPI note: The following article appeared in the May edition of Religion Watch.) While there have been efforts to encourage dialogues and cooperation between Hindu and Neopagan groups and leaders as common "indigenous" religions, the project has not had much success (with Hindu critics charging that the two religions have as many differences as similarities; see October, 2001 RW). But now Neopagan practitioners have taken matters into their own hands, forming their own "IndoPagan" rites and communities. An article in the Pagan journal PanGaia (Spring) reports that various Neopagans were worshipping and venerating various Hindu Gods and Goddesses privately for 20 years before they began to recognize and organize themselves, largely through the Internet.

In an informal survey distributed to Indo-Pagans, writer Devi Spring finds that Hindu Deities have not been popular in Neopagan or New Age circles, largely because American practitioners usually venerate the European Deities related to their own ethnic backgrounds. Among Indo-Pagans there is a wide variety of practices and views on adopting Hindu practices. Some try to separate Hindu rituals from Indian culture and practices. Others adopt such Indian Hindu practices as ritual worship known as puja, which is conducted in Sanskrit. The need for an authorized Hindu clergy for the performing of rituals is also a divisive issue among Indo-Pagans. But Indo-Pagans are said to be creating a viable subculture, with websites providing resources, such as at:here.

QUOTE
"Om, I salute Shiva in the balls"

“Wow,” he said as the mouth felt dry and thirsty, perceiving the possibility of the formation of a new cult. Finally, wiping the smirk from his face, he quietly stated, “When it comes to this Tantric practice, my lips are sealed!” Then he bowed to the picture of Lord Siva on the alter of his mind, before quickly retreating to the bathroom to apply another dose of Cruex, for the itch was irresistible! wink.gif

one of the reasons i don't associate with pagans, especially wiccan ones, is their lack of research. they don't know Eliphas Levi, solomon's seal, or even that the necronomicon was MADE UP. most still think voodoo dolls are cloth. none know the connection between ceremonial magic and wicca. eh, i'm getting off-topic, but i know real hindus who have tried to talk to the "indo-pagans" and gave up, because the "indo-pagans" refused to hear them.

I never met a live one, but that was certainly my impression reading the site. Of course most devotees are guilty of lack of research too

Sekhmetsat, I fear this says more about the Pagans and/or Wiccans of the USA (and again, perhaps only a section of them with whom you became acquainted), than the educational status of practitioners of these paths worldwide; this is certainly not my experience here in the UK.

I've seen that site before. To be fair, you can't judge the entire country by that; I'm speaking about folk I actually know, or those with whom I have been acquanted in the past.

i agree. I don't know my wicca from my wang, but i just like to see what kind of religions people are coming up with these days, and indo-pagans are finally ripe for parody. 500 years from now blowjob sadhana may be highly respected and have an international society, so I respect, scoff at, welcome and advertise all religions equally

It may well do - as I'm sure you know, there are some equally 'sinister' (and somewhat similar) practices in both Kaula, and Vajrayanic Tantra.

the problems with many hindus is that they don't know how to satisfy their gods

perhaps, but I fear a blowjob society. Not cunnilingus included. No coitus maximus. Only fellatio or no go..

Of course I would tend to, in this body at least, go for the cunniligual society being almost dual lingual already. But I couldnt survive the rules and regs.

I'm currently working with some ancient texts to revive a society/sadhana centered on heterosex, beer and Ganja. No whiskey, only beer is allowed. No wine either. No kinky stuff, and only with your girl friend (s) wife (s) . I'm not calling it Indo pagan because there is nothing pagan about it. Its pure Indo-european and moustache sporting, with some wisdom from Atlantis about crystals.

Kalisurfer, I just have to make a general comment about you that you have some shakti to convince me of things. After my bird thread several months ago you said I walked with the hawks, or as I think now 'dances with birds'. Do to you seeing a connection between me and birds, that I didn't even see, now I going bonkers for birds. I got two parakeets a month ago, and I'm making plans to get an Indian ringneck parrot now too. My life is really for the birds it seems.

But yes, I am actually planning to try my hand at surreal fiction, probably when I finish school and can't get a job as a an Indophile. Thanks for your faith in me...you'll be among the first to read the draft! thumbs up.gif

Wow...what sway I hold...that is uncanny and I better be careful on what I comment and suggest…I mean I won’t be making any suggestions about the glories of temple life to you any day soon!!! wink.gif

There was once the Birdman of Alcatraz, so why not the Birdman of Angrezi! Birds are great companions, once owned a few parakeets myself in my pre-temple years, they can be vocal friends and really liven up a house.

Surreal fiction in your hands should be just about what the world needs at this point in times. It would be an honor to one day read a draft…my mailbox awaits! coffee.gif
