QUOTE (Kula-pavana @ Feb 5 2007, 09:48 AM) QUOTE (zanardi @ Feb 5 2007, 01:29 PM) I noticed also the baby bottle. I also noticed Prabuddhapada. Every temple should have at least two. I know that King Prabhupadabuddha's statue was dynamited at one time by the locals. Anybody knows the details? Who and why blasted the statue? (or should I say "murti" it wasn't blown up but demolished by Varshana Swami using a bulldozer in 1999 or sometime around that. He did it on his own, it wasn't ordered by the GBC who liked it I guess. |

But Monkey on a Stick is only partially what went one in NV. The newer book is going to be from an insiders perspective. Also I believe Monkey on a stick came out before K's reign at New Vrindavan ended.
I wonder how honest the new book will be because it appears the guy was a Kirtanananda loyalist to the end. |

I got an earful of sad stories from East-european devotees who went there to help in exchange for eventually getting a green card. old ways die hard, especially if the old people are still setting the tone. many of these guys were seriously and permanently warped by K-swami and his crew. If these guys did not know what was going on during his regime, they are idiots who dont deserve any position of responsibility. and if they knew and still participated... that is an even worse offense. |

I spent a year at NV about 7 years ago. Its a scenic place with a dark cloud over it. Around 250 years ago many Native Americans were slaughtered on the same land Iskcon would later own. One of the main Indian killers (whose name graces roads and such in the region) is buried in a old graveyard on the Iskcon land. Then with Iskcon there were several murders and suicides on the property (including one somewhat recent suicide of an ex-gurukuli). It felt to me like the most cursed piece of land I had ever lived on, and I've been around.
The nagging feeling of sadness permeates the place, and many residents have stories of ghosts and other weird stuff happening around there. Like the Mexicans Hamm swami hired in the '80s as cheap construction labor who ended up inexplicably murdering each other in a house they stayed at near the sewage pond. When I was there you could go in the abandoned house where they had drawn a picture of Guadalupe Mary with a skull face. The artist shack near the old farmhouse where they (started to) killed Sulocana was still there too (this is pictured in monkey on a stick). Creepy stuff man. I could write a small book about the stuff I heard about from long time residents, and these creepy abandoned houses I explored with friends, or the old graveyards scattered in the woods. Or About the sankirtan leader who was witnessed boning brahmacarinis in the sankirtan van to get them fired up. NV is truely and ocean of nectar. |

The description of the empty, haunted cabins in the woods reminded me of the movie "The Evil Dead" from the 80's. Anyone seen that?

I hear you... like attracts the like... no wonder K-swami liked that place I only spent a couple of days there and had enough. The place and some of the people gave me the creeps. I have not been there since (it has been almost 20 years), even as it is not that far from here. I believe that we need to write about things that happened - both good and bad - otherwise the Iskcon mythmakers and apologists will have no problem twisting the facts and spinning yarns of convenient lies and half-truths. |

QUOTE (Open Mind @ Feb 7 2007, 02:51 AM) there are many more qualified, but as we see some that know the most about the place are still unwilling to admit how messed up the place was, and is, from what I hear currently. Of course not all bad stuff happened there. To me it just kind of conjures up the perfect image of a religious cult gone mad though which is why I find it so interesting. |

more factoids:
Hamm Sw. got in trouble with the EPA for blowing the tops off a small mountain to flatten it for the 'temple of (mis) understanding' very early on ACBS wanted a Govindaji temple on the highest hill of the original property and held a groundbreaking ceremony. Later ignored by Hamm. several suspicious fires destroyed various buildings and devotee businesses over the years. at least one local I talked to said the Hare Krishnas grew the best weed in that part of west virginia |
