2. chanting Her/His glories (meta added "Her")

3. remembering the Lord

4. serving the Lord's feet

5. worshiping the Deity

there is no other use for them, and you get them at an office supply store.

recently when i replaced mine, i went to the office supply store, and asked for a "clicker" (they call them "tally counters") the dude asked me what i wanted to count, i said matter of factly, "Mantras" he said isle 7 on the right.

I heard it is used to count newcoming guests in hotels by the receptionist. smile.gif

By the way, I never saw anyone chantig japa with an instrument like this. It is not customary in this country. I only read on Chakra that you American types use clickers for japa. ohmy.gif

well to tell you the truth, i used to use mine also to count the number of oil paintings left when my boss and temple president thought my co-worker was stealing, but that was for Krishna, so just see, there is no other use for them accept for devotional service.

we yanks use them so we can chant unattentively while driving a car, and i am sure that the receptionist was counting Life Members entering, so again, just see, only used for devotional service. biggrin.gif

Always rejoice, always give thanks, always pray!

O my Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me!

Technically I should be chanting 15 rounds (of 100) but I am lax lately.

They are used by doormen (bouncers) keeping a tally on numbers in an event. like in a night club that does not use tickets for entry. Counting sheep and other animals and similar uses.

No other use I can think of. This is a proof that everyone is chanting Hare Krsna. The second Golden Age predicted by Prabhupad has dawned upon the Earth and we rascals did not even notice it. Hurry, hurry, back to Iskcon, everybody.

one of my most persistent doubts about GV practices is the emphasis on quantity of names chanted during japa. maybe for a renunciate it is a good way to fill your day with meditative practice, but for a regular working class dasas and dasis even 16 rounds is a chore.

I have noticed that even Iskcon gurus now allow their householder disciples to take a vow for a smaller number of rounds (often as low as 4) during initiation and I applaud that approach.

I still chant regularly - mostly on beads, but also while driving, yet I no longer count my rounds or strive for any fixed number of names. I have chanted 16 rounds minimum for more than two decades but at some time I just stopped counting them. Perhaps that happened when I lost my counting beads laugh.gif I love chanting at night, while walking through the woods. Early mornings are even better but with my work schedule that is possible only on weekends.

I like chanting and I do feel the benefit of good japa. I also like kirtans in the temple a lot more than I ever did, especially if they are good. The only bhajans I like are the Jaya Radha Madhava prayers, Mangalacarana, and the Maha Mantra. But harmonium is almost a must in these bhajans. Most of the Bengali bhajans do very little for me. And I do like Damodarastakam very much when the time comes for it.

I could never see why, when associating with the absolute through chanting, quantity would have any bearing on the quality of the transcendental experience.

It reminds me of being commanded to love Jesus – or burn.

No wonder love is so unfashionable and misunderstood.

Get a keyboard and learn to play it. violin.gif

It will do wonders to round out that scientific mind of yours.

Meta, can you kindly add another poll item?

I chant when I am inspired to.
