THE ART OF DISAPPEARING
by Naomi Shihab Nye When they say Don't I know you? say no. When they invite you to the party remember what parties are like before answering. Someone telling you in a loud voice they once wrote a poem. Greasy sausage balls on a paper plate. Then reply. If they say we should get together. say why? It's not that you don't love them any more. You're trying to remember something too important to forget. Trees. The monastery bell at twilight. Tell them you have a new project. It will never be finished. When someone recognizes you in a grocery store nod briefly and become a cabbage. When someone you haven't seen in ten years appears at the door, don't start singing him all your new songs. You will never catch up. Walk around feeling like a leaf. Know you could tumble any second. Then decide what to do with your time. |

QUOTE (everybodysux @ Aug 31 2006, 03:54 PM) THE ART OF DISAPPEARING by Naomi Shihab Nye I love this poem, a lot… and can relate to it in ways that even shocks the multiple personalities that hide within and only come out when the hinges get greased or there is a knock on the back door where the old sign that says Creativity has decomposed! Thanks for posting it and getting me out of my own disappearing act for a moment! Now…to only be a cabbage and feel like a leaf again!!! -------------------- "It's not how many times you draw breath that counts in a lifetime, but how many time something takes your breath away."

I second that. This delightful "cabbage desiderata" makes me feel normal for a change.

Bumping up this thread with a priceless topic title...
It turns out that all of our anonymous lurking Guests are good for something after all. When I go to GR, I usually scroll all the way down to see who is online. There are usually some named members, Google and some guests. By clicking on Show last click (or something similar) you can see where these souls are. (At least I can see it as a Mod... test for yourself!) So today, one guest turned out to be reading something called "Become a cabbage". Intrigued, I revisited the thread. It is worth reading again! -------------------- Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler. (Einstein)

Cabbage you say? let us prey. Prey... 1. To hunt, catch, or eat as prey: Owls prey on mice. 2. To victimize or make a profit at someone else's expense. 3. To plunder or pillage. 4. To exert a baneful or injurious effect -------------------- ![]() CONFIDENTIALITY STATEMENT: This message, together with any attachments is intended only for the use of the individual or entity to which it is addressed. OK, this thread totally legitimizes my excuse to handle this board like the drunk that I am.
