GAWD, Kalisurfer, I don't know how I missed your matchbox ad -- it's tantalizing! Baron Munchhausen and the upturned baby tickle the imagination! I wonder whether washing babies like that is a summer or winter sport?
It composes nicely with Gerard's latest addition -- both would arouse howls of indignation if they were to launch today! -------------------- Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler. (Einstein)

What caught my attention on Kali's matchbox ad is the French text underneath the illustration: "La seule utilité de leau." Partly because it's French on an American specimen of merchandize (they are not famous for knowing French over there), and partly because it is misspelled (obviously). The correct version should read "La seule utilité de l'eau." Subtle, but essential. Translation: "The only thing water is good for." So I googled the French string and found this image: With some explanations (and mistranslated, of course) here: (1930) Hi-Hat Menu~Georges Redon Cover/The Use of Water Description This is a rare, vintage menu from The Hi-Hat, which was located at 3927 Wilshire Boulevard, Los Angeles, California. The cover artwork is by the French illustrator, Georges Redon (1869-1943), and is a print of one of his well known pastels featuring a maid washing a baby's bottom under a spigot. The work is titled, "la seule utilite de l'eau" [Only the use of water]. -------------------- In this endeavor there is no loss of ammunition (Gita 2.40).
