Elvis Is Everywhere

By Mike Nizza

Tags: americana, music

If scientists somehow proved that there was absolutely nothing more to say about Elvis Presley, it wouldn’t matter a bit. Just one look at the Elvis Sighting Bulletin Board proves that point: News is being generated beyond all reason. Of course, Elvis worship is not about reason; it’s about love. And in the year 2007, that love is being spread in the great snow globe that is the Web. And yes, it’s all shook up today, the 30th anniversary of his death.

Elvis is everywhere. The endless succession starts are Google News and seemingly never ends. He’s on invading your TV and YouTube; inspiring impersonations by animatronic devices and real people; prompting vigils across the world, from Germany to Japan; and headlining whole sections of news sites, guitar contests, junk food and innumerable tchotchkes.

Faced with this saturation as 75,000 fans descend on Graceland to remember the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll, a columnist at London’s Telegraph asks the least obvious question: What if Elvis Presley had never been born? Ray Connolly reviews his career and the phenomenon before getting to the two sides of a coin:

There will be those who regret that Elvis Presley ever did exist, seeing his arrival as the beginning of an increasingly depraved downward spiral into an abyss of moral turpitude and decadent, primeval music. On the other hand, that most distinctive of voices has delighted and motivated for over half a century.

So where does he stand? Mr. Connolly simply endorses five powerful words from one of the more renowned admirers. “Before Elvis, there was nothing,” John Lennon once said.

Elvis Is Everywhere

It's true, I saw Elvis while passing through Cleveland last week. He drives a truck for a living and it looked like he was ready to do some water skiing like he did in some of his old movies like Clambake, only here it was going to be on Lake Erie, which is ironic, since the whole episode seemed rather eerie in it own way! He's a Scientologist now, finds bliss on the road truckin secret goods from the planet Treton to underground Scientologist bunkers in the Midwest. Still wears blue suede shoes though, never touches the guitar anymore unfortunately, says his music satisfaction comes from Ron Hubbard songs in the celestial realms...oh well…but hey...I saw the King! party0009.gif

At least Nixon picked someone with qualification and experience in the field...perhaps his position helped score those wonderful uppers and downers he was so fond of late in life?

I think I was about 8 or 9 when I first started listening to Elvis' music, and I was so enamoured with the guy that I thought he was so handsome and when I grew up I would like to have plastic surgery to look as handsome as he is in this pic:

It was a silly idea. But anyway, I satisfied myself by combing my hair in his style for the next several years...

There is a Christmas Tree lot in my area that always advertises itself as the place where Elvis buys his tree each year. I used to think it was a cute way of bringing attention to the small lot, but this year, low and behold, the King appeared ... though I'd like to remember him as he used to be ... but then again, perhaps we would all like to think of ourselves in ways that we used to be?

Well, I surprised the King as he was drinking some vodka to keep warm, and told him of his number one fan in England, which he then blurted out loudly, "I thought the queen died years ago ... you mean she's alive?" So I tried to explain to him about a friend of mine named Brainiac who exists on the internet in a forum for former Hare Krishna's, and if he could please give me an autograph for him ... at which point he stopped me in mid-sentence,. looking at me as if I was crazy and said, "Son, I'd stay off the evil weed and stick to spirits in a bottle or pills from the Doc", then handing me his empty Smirnoff bottle before disappearing quickly behind the tree's ... humming Blue Christmas into the snowy distance ... and in an instant, he was gone once again ... oh well, I tried!

Elvis fever shakes, rattles and rolls Australian town
16 hours ago

SYDNEY (AFP) — The quiet Australian town of Parkes was awash with Brylcreem, gabardine and gospel, as a record number of Elvis faithful met there to pay homage to The King, according to organisers.

Cooked up one summer's night at the local "Gracelands" restaurant, the Elvis Festival has exploded from a one-night event in 1993 to an annual five-day phenomenon attracting thousands of fans and curious tourists."
