Do You Need a Guru?, by Mariana Caplan

Putting aside the moot question of whether one needs a guru or not, the fact is one cannot avoid gurus (in every sense of the word) because life is a continuum of learning in contexts involving others. We are, whether we like it or not, being bombarded with deliberate or incidental gurus wherever we turn.

The thing is to choose the guru most consonant with our make up so as to keep the less desirable ones at bay !

What I am saying is: if you cannot avoid something make sure you have a choice in what you get.

Thanks. FLOWERS.GIF

The word "guru" has too many strange connotations nowadays. Forget the word and learn to learn from as many people as possible as much as possible. This is just my humble opinion and the way I try to live my life. closedeyes.gif

"If Krishna consciousness is a science, it is like physics or chemistry. We have scientists like Einstein. We don't worship Einstein. We just follow the science.
Why must we worship 'scientists' who know the Krishna conscious science? Why must we accept that they have a monopoly of a vision of reality that others
don't?"

- 'Prajyumna'

(a good article on the whole)

I don't know enough to tell, is this "Prajyumna" the famous Sanskrit god Pradyumna from the old days? I'm also not sure who is the 'other guru' or 'Maharaj' he is complaining about. Is it NM?

Thanks

No idea, Ras. I guess it's an anonymous article from someone who just wants to share their thoughts on reinitiation, etc. Yeah, 'Prajyumna' is a misspelling, it probably meant to be Pradyumna, the son of Krishna.

I am the Prajyumna who wrote that article. My initiated name is Pradyumna. To distinguish myself from it, I go by Prajyumna. I'm glad you liked the article.

Hi Prajyumna, it is very nice to see you here. I re-read your article and I still think it is excellent and asks great questions. smile.gif If you don't mind sharing, how do you feel about reinitiation or disillusionment nowadays? Have you published any other articles since then? It is really good to see you here, I really loved your article, especially the bit that I quoted above.

Hi Brainiac, thanks for welcoming. I have been looking for a forum like the one you have here for a while. I'm not sure why I never came across it before. There are a lot of "between the lines" feelings that I have that I hope to express here. You know...the kinds of feelings that don't fully belong in the devotee world nor in the secular world.

I have had a few other pieces published. In this one I express some of my experiences in ISKCON...both as a gurukuli and a devotee. I'd be curious to hear what you think: "The Destruction and Resurrection of My Hare Krsna Faith"
